About Eddie Hughes

My name is Eddie Hughes, I am Head of Special Collections in the John B. Cde Library.  I am originally from Baton Rouge, LA. I received my BA and MAT in History from Grambling State University and I received my MSLS in Library Studies from Clark Atlanta University.  I am married to Monica and together we have two children.  I enjoy my career as a librarian because the nature of the profession is conducive to my efforts of living a simple life and it also allows me to help others achieve their endeavors; in addition, as a librarian I am knowledgeable of the latest research techniques and computer technology.

My main aspiration is to eliminate trepidation and intimidation sometimes associated with higher education.

My favorite color is brown and my philosophy of life is:

Simplicity is of Nature.
If it is not Simple,
Then it is not Natural.
So, Be Simple.

Eddie's List of his Favorite Books

I can't say I have one book that is responsible for the shaping of my attitudes, interest, and values; however, I can think of 9 books that are instrumental in the establishing of my philosophy of life.  They are:

Reasons to Climb a Mountain

This notion to “climb a mountain because it is there” is not of nature.  The only reason a person should climb a mountain is if something they need is at the top of that mountain i.e. food, water, shelter, or a companion.  Socrates taught that a person should seek to challenge themselves everyday and also challenge the people they meet each day.  According to Socrates, this challenging of self and others makes a person better.  In my view, this challenging of self and others is unnatural.  A person should only seek to cultivate their natural goodness; in doing so, they will be made cheerful, peaceful, and secure.  Once a person becomes cheerful, peaceful, and secure they cannot be made better.  Always wanting more, not accepting “good enough”, and “climbing mountains because they are there” are all unnatural yearnings.   Unnatural yearnings lead to depression, unnatural yearnings foster hypertension, and unnatural yearnings cause mental illness.  “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”  Our intellect needs poetry, our eyes need beauty, our hearts need romance, and our souls need love.  This is what we live for.  These are the reasons a person should climb a mountain.
