Style Guides
A style guide or style manual is a set of standards for writing documents. Style guides will show you how to properly use and prepare: in-text citations, footnotes & endnotes, and reference list.
Always consult with your instructor regarding which style guide to use when writing your research paper.
Vocabulary
- Footnote is a not of text placed at the bottom of a printed page, that adds a comment, citation, reference, etc., to a designated part of the main text.
- Endnote is a style of citing that places a number in the body of the text. This number refers to a citation listed at the end of the text.
- Block quotation (also known as a long quotation or exacts quote) is a quotation in a written document which is set off from the main text as a distinct paragraph (or block).
- Signal phrase is a phrase that signals to the reader that either a direct quote or a paraphrase is about to follow.
- Intellectual property is creative ideas and expressions of the human mind that have commercial value and receive the legal protection of a property right.
- Copyright laws protect an original artistic or literary work.
- Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowleding the source of information.
- In-text citation is information provided about the source in the text of your research paper. Often, in-text citations include a signal phrase which gives the author's name and a parenthetical reference, which can include the author's and the page number.
