National Library Week 2021:Welcome To Your Library!: History

This libguide provides an overview about National Library Week, and information about the events sponsored the John B. Cade Library to celebrate National Library Week this year.

History

National Library Week came to fruition because research in the 1950s revealed that people were spending more time using other types of entertainment, and reading less. Therefore, the American Library Association and American Book Publishers formed the National Book Committee in 1954. The National Book Committee had a goal to increase the amount of time that people read for pleasure. The National Library Committee planned the first National Library Week in 1957 with the notion that people support libraries more when they are motivated to read. The first National Library week was sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958. More information about the history of National Library Week can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
